EMV 3-D Secure is the messaging protocol behind the 'Verified by Visa' and 'Mastercard Identity Check' flows that authenticate card-not-present purchases. Maintained by EMVCo, it shares risk, device, and merchant data with the card issuer so that most transactions are approved without challenging the shopper. Version 2 added frictionless authentication and native support for in-app and mobile commerce, retiring the browser-redirect model of the original 3-D Secure.
