The Java Card specification lets developers write applets in a constrained subset of Java that run inside a smart card's secure element, isolated from one another by an on-card firewall. Maintained originally by Sun and now Oracle, it brought platform independence to chips with only kilobytes of memory, so a single applet can run across cards from different silicon vendors. It is the dominant application platform for SIMs, payment cards, and government identity cards.
