ISO/IEC

Defines the Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU) command/response structure used by all smart cards.

ISO/IEC 7816-4 defines the Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU), the command-and-response message structure that every smart card uses to communicate with a terminal. It specifies the four-byte command header, standard instructions such as SELECT and READ, and the status words a card returns to report success or error. As the lingua franca of card commands, it is the part of ISO 7816 that application developers work with most directly.
