Interfaces for Personal Identity Verification defining the PIV card edge, data model, and client APIs for US federal identity.

NIST SP 800-73 specifies the interfaces for the federal PIV card — the card edge commands, the on-card data model, and the client application programming interface used to read credentials. It turns the policy requirements of FIPS 201 into a concrete, interoperable card specification so that any compliant reader can use any agency's card. Successive revisions have added support for the contactless interface and secure messaging.
