EMVCo

EMVCo specifications for chip-based contact payment card transactions, defining application selection, transaction flow, and risk management.

The EMV Contact Specifications, maintained by EMVCo, define how an inserted chip card and terminal conduct a payment — covering application selection, offline and online data authentication, cardholder verification, and issuer risk management. Their adoption produced the 'liability shift' that moved counterfeit-fraud responsibility to whichever party had not deployed chip technology, driving the global migration away from magnetic-stripe transactions. They form the base on which the contactless and mobile EMV kernels are built.
