The Card Type Identifier resolves Application Identifiers (AIDs) and ATR strings to their registered card type, issuing organization, and associated specification, providing instant identification of smart cards across payment, transit, healthcare, and government sectors.
Smart card identification is complicated by the large number of registered AIDs across multiple registries. EMVCo maintains AIDs for global payment networks; GSMA and ETSI maintain AIDs for cellular SIM and UICC applications; ISO/IEC 7816-5 maintains the global RID registry for all other application categories. The Card Identifier aggregates these sources into a single lookup, matching input AIDs against the combined registry and returning the canonical application name, issuer, and card OS where known.
For field technicians and card personalization engineers, the identifier accelerates troubleshooting by confirming whether an unfamiliar card carries a recognized application before attempting APDU communication. For payment terminal certification engineers, it verifies that test cards carry the correct AIDs for each payment scheme under test. The ATR matching feature complements AID lookup by identifying the card platform and communication parameters from the reset response alone, before any APDU exchange occurs.
