Personal Computer/Smart Card specification defining smart card reader API for desktop operating systems.

The PC/SC specification defines a standard architecture for connecting smart-card readers to desktop and server operating systems, abstracting reader hardware behind a common API. Implemented natively in Windows and via the open-source PCSClite project on macOS and Linux, it lets one application work with readers from many manufacturers. It is the layer that middleware such as PKCS#11 modules and identity clients rely on to reach the card.
